1962 Rolex Datejust

We’ve said it before, and we’ll keep saying it: the Datejust might be the perfect watch.

It ticks all the boxes—ideal proportions, a clean and legible dial, and a movement built to run for decades. Rolex’s most prolific model has remained in continuous production for a reason. It doesn’t try to do everything. It just does everything well. For most people, the Datejust is genuinely all the watch they’ll ever need.

The Reference 1601 is one of the most recognizable expressions of the Datejust, distinguished by its fluted gold bezel. It stands apart from its sister references—the 1603 with its engine-turned steel bezel and the 1600 with a smooth steel bezel. Like all 1600-series Datejusts, the 1601 features a pie-pan dial, acrylic crystal, and the classic 36mm case.

This particular example dates to circa 1962 and is fitted with the less-commonly seen alpha handset, a hand style most prevalent in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It’s a small detail, but one that adds real period character—and a reminder that even Rolex’s most familiar watch has nuances worth appreciating.
