1976 Omega Speedmaster Professional

The Speedmaster was first introduced in 1957, and ever since, the brand has continuously refined and evolved the model. Here, we have the Ref. 145.022-76, a later evolution of the 145.022, which originally debuted in 1969. The reference numbers often reflect the year of introduction rather than the exact production year. For example, the prior Speedy with Ref. 145.022-69 ran from 1969 to around 1971. For this particular Speedy with Ref. 145.022-76 can be traced back to 1976 based on its serial number, making it one of the earlier examples of this reference.

This piece features the iconic 42mm case with twisted lyre lugs and is powered by the manually wound caliber 861—the movement that replaced the legendary caliber 321. It stays true to the classic Speedmaster Professional design that’s been defining the collection since 1967. While Speedmasters from the later 1970s do not always get the same level of attention as their 1960s predecessors, they also aren’t as commonly found as those from the 1980s, making this particular reference a compelling, somewhat underappreciated piece for collectors.
