This is the Reference 1630, a rare bird. It takes on the Oysterquartz case, but if you look closely, the word "Perpetual" is there, so it is in fact an automatic. Collectors call it the "Pre-Oysterquartz."
With the arrival of the Land-Dweller, many enthusiasts have revisited the 1630 and begun to see it in a different light. No, Rolex has never confirmed it as the original blueprint for the Land-Dweller, but the resemblance is impossible to ignore. The integrated design language, the bold geometry, and the willingness to break from convention all feel strikingly familiar.
