1989 Rolex Day-Date "Tridor"

Today we are featuring the Day Date Reference 18239B a.k.a. the Tridor.

The name itself tells the story. Tridor is derived from the French tri d'or—literally, "three golds." Rolex took the President bracelet, one of the most recognizable designs in watchmaking, and transformed it into something no one else could. White gold formed the foundation, while the center links composed of yellow, rose, and white gold flowed through the bracelet, creating a subtle spectrum of precious metals that shifted with every change in light. It wasn't a two-tone watch. It wasn't a full-gold watch. It was something entirely its own.

The market, however, wasn't quite ready for it.

Introduced in the 1980s, the Tridor was an ambitious departure from the brand’s design language. Production remained limited, demand was modest, and the model quietly disappeared from the catalog. Ironically, the very qualities that made it a commercial curiosity have made it one of the most fascinating Day-Dates for collectors today.

This example elevates it even further.

Its Anniversary dial—adorned with Rolex's repeating monogram to commemorate the brand's centennial—adds depth and texture that reveals itself only as the light moves across the surface. Factory diamond hour markers complete the composition, still refined despite all the “bling” that comes with it.
