1990s Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

We’ve always had a soft spot for mid-size Royal Oaks.

The Jumbo is the icon, no question. But at 39mm, it can wear large. Not everyone wants that, and not everyone should. That’s where the mid-size references come in.

Shortly after the original 5402, Audemars Piguet began producing smaller Royal Oaks, ranging from 33mm to 37mm. Same design language. Same integrated bracelet. Just better proportions for smaller wrists or for anyone who prefers a more traditional fit.

Among them, the reference 14700 stands apart.

At 36mm, with a thinner bezel and a wider dial opening, it wears noticeably closer to the Jumbo than most mid-size models. Less compact. More balanced. Closer to the original idea. That’s why collectors call it the “Mini Jumbo.”

It’s also a transitional reference, produced for roughly one year between 1991 and 1992, which makes it uncommon.

This example is the two-tone configuration: stainless steel case, 18k yellow gold bezel, and matching integrated bracelet. The grey Petite Tapisserie dial is classic AP, finished with long applied markers and a champagne-colored date disc.

Sold in the early 1990s and accompanied by Audemars Piguet Japan service papers dating to 2022, it remains in excellent condition.
