The Cartier Colisée is named after the Colosseum (Colisée in French) in Rome. So, the design makes a lot of sense.
Unlike the Tank, Santos, or Pasha—which have very obvious geometric identities—the Colisée revolves around a perfectly circular case framed by a thick, architectural bezel. Cartier's designers intended the watch to evoke the shape and structure of the ancient Roman amphitheater, particularly its concentric rings and strong circular silhouette.
The name first appeared in the 1980s, during a period when Cartier was expanding far beyond its traditional Tank and Santos collections. The brand was experimenting with softer, more jewelry-oriented designs, particularly for women, and the Colisée became one of the signatures of that era.
