DESCRIPTION

The Omega Speedmaster Professional hardly needs an introduction. Few watches can claim to have accompanied mankind to the Moon, and even fewer have remained relevant half a century later. Yet among collectors, some of the most interesting Speedmasters aren't the rarest or the oldest—they're the transitional references that quietly mark the end of one era and the beginning of another.

This particular Speedmaster, a Ref. 3570.50 from 1996, belongs to exactly that category.

Throughout the 1990s, Omega was gradually updating the Moonwatch. New references were introduced, movements evolved, and production shifted toward what would eventually become the modern Speedmaster we know today. As often happens during these transitions, things weren't quite so straightforward. For a brief period, Omega found itself using remaining stocks of the legendary Caliber 861 movement inside watches carrying the newer 3570.50 reference.

The result is what many collectors affectionately refer to as a "transitional" Speedmaster.

These watches received the newer reference number, but retained many of the traits enthusiasts love about earlier examples: the tritium dial, tritium hands, and most importantly, the final iterations of the Caliber 861. Produced only within a narrow serial range during the mid-to-late 1990s, they represent the last chapter of a movement whose lineage stretches directly back to the Apollo era.

And that's what makes watches like this so compelling.

The Caliber 861 powered Speedmasters for decades, accompanying astronauts, engineers, racers, and collectors alike. By the time Omega transitioned fully to the Caliber 1861, an important chapter in Speedmaster history had quietly come to a close.

The truth is, most people will never notice the difference between a transitional Speedmaster and any other Moonwatch.

Collectors will.

And that's precisely the point.

This watch was originally sold in 1996 at Higashi-cho, Nagasaki, Japan and comes with its original warranty card (papers) and hang tag.
