Seiko, as a conglomerate, holds several subsidiary brands such as Orient, Grand Seiko, and many others. One of these subsidiaries is Credor, established in 1974 to produce watches that showcase Japanese aesthetics coupled with engineering excellence.

The term "Credor" is derived from the French phrase "Créte d’Or," meaning “the ultimate of the gold”, hence, originally, Credor watches were only crafted in precious metals. Presently, the brand has integrated stainless steel into its collections while maintaining the same commitment to premium craftsmanship.

A noteworthy piece from Credor is the Phoenix reference GCBR995, recognized by seasoned collectors as the Alpinist version of the brand. This particular piece was created just at the turn of the millennium, and is a hidden gem in my opinion. It flawlessly combines the attributes of an exploratory sports watch with a touch of elegance, featuring a sharp and legible crosshair dial, prominent cyclops magnifier, applied shark tooth indices, and accents of red on the sweeping seconds hand and hour markers to add a bit of pop. The history and design on this watch already makes for a good value proposition, but to know that it uses the 8L75 automatic movement, which is essentially the same caliber found in Grand Seiko's SBGR models, is the epitome of a “bang for the buck.”
