The Holy Trinity: Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Vacheron Constantin.
In the 1970s, each released a steel sports watch that would define the category — Patek with the Nautilus, AP with the Royal Oak, and Vacheron with the 222.
The 222 was eventually discontinued and the Overseas model took over.
Today, the Overseas is instantly recognizable by its Maltese Cross–inspired bezel and caseback. It was originally offered in five dial variations; this example features the white dial with its distinctive guilloché pattern, housed in one of the most technically impressive cases in modern watchmaking.
While early Nautilus and Royal Oak prices have gone haywire, the Overseas remained a connoisseur’s choice for years — overlooked, understated, and underappreciated.
Though that’s changing.
Demand is rising, supply remains thin, and Vacheron still produces far fewer watches than its peers, largely by hand and largely in-house. It is the rarest of the Trinity — and the oldest continuously operating watch manufacture in the world.
