Scroll through Tudor’s website and you’ll find the hits: latest releases, modern watches, and a carefully curated timeline of vintage Tudors. What you won’t find is the Hydronaut—or much acknowledgment of Tudor from roughly 1998 to 2009. It’s almost as if that chapter never happened, which is criminal in my opinion.
The Hydronaut was a ”bridge watch.” It marked the end of Tudor’s Submariner era and quietly laid the groundwork for what would later become the Black Bay. More importantly, it was one of the first moments where Tudor began stepping out from Rolex’s shadow and trying to define itself—sometimes awkwardly, sometimes brilliantly.
Yes, some Hydronaut versions leaned into some hardcore experimentation: loud colors, unusual materials, and design risks that feel downright rebellious by today’s standards. And we love that. Brands don’t move forward by playing it safe. The Hydronaut’s quirky, geometric handset is unmistakable—odd at first glance, but incredibly legible. The bezel follows suit with bold typography and blocky 0–15 minute markings that feel unmistakably modern for the time.
Rolex Oyster bracelets were notably absent here, likely by design. Instead, Tudor paired the Hydronaut with its signature five-link Prince bracelet—most likely an intentional move to further separate the two brands.
The example offered here features the rare and highly desirable blue dial, housed in a perfectly wearable 36mm case with a triplock crown. Bezel action is exactly what you want it to be: smooth, precise, and crisp. What makes the watch tick is a highly reliable ETA caliber that, as a bonus, is easily serviceable by watchmakers.
Make no mistake, this isn’t a consolation prize for those priced out of a Submariner. The Hydronaut stands on its own merits, and the collectors who’ve been paying attention have known that for years.
Sometimes the forgotten chapters are the most interesting ones.
