2012 Rolex Submariner

"The last of the best."

It's a nickname that has stuck with the Rolex Submariner 14060M for good reason.

As the successor to the iconic 5512 and 5513, the 14060M held onto everything collectors loved about the classic Submariner. Slim crown guards, narrow lugs, an aluminum bezel, and a clean no-date dial gave it the same timeless proportions, while the Caliber 3130 underneath brought the reliability and durability expected from a modern Rolex.

One of the biggest changes during the 14060M's production came in 2007. Earlier examples featured the simple two-line dial, but once the movement received its official Superlative Chronometer certification, Rolex added the now-recognizable four lines of text above 6 o'clock. The result is what collectors now refer to as the "4-Liner."

Since the 4-Liner was only produced during the final years of the reference, it's noticeably less common than the earlier two-line version. A 2012 example sits right at the end of that production run, just before Rolex introduced the ceramic-bezel Submariner.

For many, that's exactly what makes the 14060M so appealing. It has the charm and proportions of the older Submariners, but with the refinements of a modern movement. It's often considered the perfect middle ground between vintage and modern Rolex—and perhaps that's why so many collectors still call it the last of the best.
