2020 IWC Portofino Chronograph

This IWC Portofino Chronograph is proof that a chronograph doesn’t need to shout to make its point. While most watches with this complication lean aggressively sporty, the Portofino takes the opposite route, which makes the Ref. IW391008 far more elegant and restrained. IWC itself described this reference as bringing a “refreshingly sporty note” to the Portofino line, which feels exactly right—it’s a chronograph, yes, but one filtered through the lens of classic dress watch design.

Housed in a 42mm stainless steel case, the watch has enough presence to feel modern, but the overall design keeps it from becoming overbearing. The smooth bezel, rounded case profile, and slim bezel-to-dial ratio give it the easygoing, almost Mediterranean vibe that defines the Portofino family. Paired with a black alligator strap, it strikes that sweet spot between formal and everyday—refined enough for a jacket, relaxed enough not to require one.

The dial is brilliantly executed. Rendered in black with contrasting silver-tone details, it has the balanced, functional look you want from a chronograph, but without the visual clutter that often comes with this much real estate. The sub-registers, day-date display, and applied markers are all perfectly proportioned.

What makes the IW391008 compelling is that it doesn’t force a choice between elegance and usefulness. It gives you both. Quietly handsome, extremely wearable, and just sporty enough.
