Debuting in 1932, the Tank Basculante was Cartier's answer to the design challenge posed by the need for a protective watch case. Rather than merely replicating existing reversible designs, Cartier took a unique approach. The Basculante’s case doesn't simply flip like other reversible watches; it pivots on a horizontal axis, rotating gracefully within its frame. 

Visually, the Tank Basculante retains the classic Cartier aesthetics: Roman numerals, chemin de fer chapter ring, and the distinctive blued steel hands. But its signature feature is undeniably the art-deco inspired rectangular case, which stands as a testament to Cartier’s dedication in marrying form and function, all while maintaining elegance.
