IWC Mark XVI Spitfire (Card & Manual)

At the onset of the 20th century, aviation soared to new heights as fully functional airplanes took flight and operated successfully, and as pilots dared to conquer the skies. This era marked the emergence of wristwatches and aviation timepieces, driven by the necessity for accurate navigation. Pilots, transitioning from pocket watches, required timepieces that were able to withstand extreme environments all whilst being precise, reliable, and legible.

This was also the time when IWC (International Watch Co) Schaffhausen was pivotal in creating a watch for pilots that was deemed air-worthy. With the introduction of the IWC Mark Series, the company not only met this demand but also embarked on a lasting tradition of crafting outstanding pilot's watches.

The Mark XVI featured here is the first watch under the Mark Series that was considered contemporary, with an upsized case at 39mm. Other notable changes are the 6 and 9 numerals that were replaced with stick hour markers, a more modern look for the Arabic hour numerals, and broader Flieger hands.
