Diving down to Japanese watchmaking history, the term Seiko was derived from the word “Seikosha” – Sei 精 meaning exquisite or delicate, Ko 工 meaning manufacturing or engineering, and Sha 舎 meaning house.
Seiko took the world by storm, expanding globally and were widely known for their tool watches.
Fast forward to the 1960s, Seiko began to further its goals by taking on the renowned watchmaking of Swiss manufacturers. They didn’t just dip their toes, they went all in – investing and putting up two separate factories with the sole focus of challenging Swiss timekeeping, and this would later become the birth of Daini Seikosha (creator of King Seiko) and Suwa Seikosha (creator of Grand Seiko).
The reason behind putting up two factories is to promote competition internally.
The watch featured today came from the Daini Seikosha factory in 1971. It’s a watch befitting of the era – dressy with a bit of funk. From its TV case, linen dial, and history behind, this will definitely be a conversation piece.
