1976 Rolex Cellini 18K Gold

Ah, Cellini, the forgotten Rolex. We’ve been bombarded with Datejusts and Submariners over the years, and have neglected to talk about this Rolex dress watch – pretty much the same back in the 1960s.

Rolex is a company, after all. And companies need to find new ways to generate profits. Before, the idea was a one-watch collection – a versatile Submariner that you can wear on the boardwalk and in the boardroom. But in the 60s, the company’s marketing department introduced the idea of a “Rolex collector”, basically owning multiple Rolex watches to be used on different occasions. Tool watches like the Submariner and GMTs have already found success, and it paved the way for the next lineup – a dress watch, a.k.a. the Cellini.

Initially, the Cellini ventured into diverse designs with unconventional cases, angular lines, and gemstone settings. However, by the '70s, Rolex shifted from avant-garde styles to a more traditional, conservative look. The collection underwent refinement, resulting in Cellini watches that embraced simplicity and timelessness, all made to Rolex's impeccable standards with subtle touches of refined luxury - and featured here is the perfect example.
