The Rolex Datejust has a storied history that traces back to its debut in 1945 when Rolex released the very first Datejust model to celebrate the company's 40th anniversary. The initial Datejust was groundbreaking as it was the first self-winding chronometer wristwatch to feature an automatically changing date window on the dial - hence the name "Datejust".

The Datejust Reference 1601 was introduced in the 1960s and remained in production until the late 1970s. This model became one of the most popular Datejust models and is still a favorite among vintage Rolex collectors today.

Back then, this specific reference stood out for its signature white gold fluted bezel and pie-pan dial - features that are now synonymous with the Datejust line. Over time, Rolex has updated and evolved the Datejust series with new features, movements, and design tweaks. However, the Datejust 1601 remains a classic, a symbol of Rolex's rich history, and the ancestor of the modern Datejusts we have today.
