The textured pattern on this piece is commonly referred to as a linen dial. In the collector circle, the proper term is "shantung dial", as it draws inspiration from a silk fabric made in Shandong, China. Rumor has it that Rolex only produced this type of design for 10 years (1968-1978) which makes it highly collectible. Another rumor is that it was marketed towards the Asian market as the familiarity of design makes them appealing. It was also coined as a "mosaic dial" as it is somewhat similar to the pattern of mosaic tiles.
