Back in the day, gold watches get their color through a gold filling process, wherein one of the main ingredients is a 5% gold alloy. Due to the surge in competition driven by the entrance of quartz watches, traditional watchmakers searched for ways to remain competitive, one of which is the reduction of retail price tags, made possible by correspondingly cutting costs. A cost cutting method they found is the replacement of the gold filling process with gold plating, which requires a miniscule gold alloy amount of 0.05%, essentially a hundred times lower. ⠀⠀⠀

How does gold-filled vs. gold-plated compare, durability wise? Gold-filled watches has 100x more gold alloy than gold plated, and because the layer is much thicker, gold-filled will last longer as it stands up to wear and tear better. One scratch on a gold-plated piece can immediately expose the jeweler's brass underneath.
