Rolex Oyster Perpetual "Sigma Dial"

In 1967, Seiko and Longines presented to the world a working prototype of quartz (battery-powered) wristwatches. The invention of quartz technology posed a threat to traditional Swiss watchmakers, which had them scrambling for solutions in order to keep their proverbial head above water. One of these solutions is to print the sigma (σ) symbol on the dial – look closely below 6 o’clock.

A sigma symbol on a watch indicates that the hands and indices are made of solid gold – a subtle and creative way to highlight a watch’s selling point, as well as to increase its perceived intrinsic value. During this period as well, gold prices were skyrocketing, which inherently meant that acquiring a watch with solid gold parts made it a viable alternative investment.
